A new resort with a golf course is opening on Mount Geumgang (Kumgang), North Korea.

The ANANTI Kumgang Mountain, built by Emerson Pacific, a Korean country club and resort company, will open on May 14, with luxury villas, golf course and spa, along with the natural beauty of the scenic mountain as background. England-based resort operator General Hotel Management will operate the resort.

The 18-hole golf course has views that include both rugged Mount Geumgang and the East Sea. The course held a Korea Professional Golfer's Association event last October, the first golf event in North Korea. It has some special holes including the world's longest hole and a funnel-shaped hole on which every golfer can get a hole-in-one.

Separate, private villas are similar to luxury villas at Southeast Asian resorts. Guests can enjoy private sulfur spring jacuzzi in each villa, watching the view of Mount Geumgang outside the window.

An open-air hot spring is also available, surrounded by the mountain and the East Sea. The spa will adopt Bali-style massage program, in which Indonesian therapists will offer various types of massage.

The ANANTI is a membership resort, but plans to expand the facility to the public in the near future. In an opening event, members visiting the resort between May 14 and June 30 will be able to enjoy the facilities including villas for free. 

Like trips to Mount Geumgang and other North Korean destinations, visitors have to undergo customs, immigration and quarantine procedures. The reservation center of the resort will handle these processes.

KTO Recruits Volunteer for Taean Oil Cleanup

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) is inviting foreign residents here to participate in oil cleanup operations in Taean, South Chungcheong Province, where the nation's larges oil spill hit last December.

Many beaches and seashores there have been recovered through efforts from over a million volunteers, but the warm spring weather is melting oil stuck on rocks and is feared to cause a second surge of pollution. 

As an effort to clean the seashores and help boost tourism in the region, which vacationers have shunned, the tourism body is holding ``2008 Korea Sparkling Campaign ― Miracle of Taean'' with foreign participants.

The KTO will recruit 300 participants and will receive application from foreigners here until May 13 on its English Web site http://english.visitkorea.or.kr. The trip for the cleanup will take place on May 17. The cost is 15,000 won, which will be used for paying transportation, lunch, and necessary supplies.
